Due to the fact there is no official National Database of Boiled Water Advisories in Canada, communities have to rely on posted notices, word of mouth, or local news organizations to make such announcements. Even with the best reporting technologies, there are bound to be incidents where residents are not aware of the BWA's and putting them at risk of consuming what may possibly be contaminated water.
In July 2008, we had 1,766 BWA's in effect throughout the Country, according to the Canadian Medical Association Journal. The Water Chronicles (www.water.ca) has recent data that shows there are 1,036 BWA's in Canada and 39-Do Not Consume orders. Of these numbers Manitoba has 100 BWA's with British Colombia having the highest number at 255, and Nunavut with 0 BWA's. (Due to reporting variances these numbers are best estimates). Thanks to the Water Chronicles for providing the data.
