When on a high protein diet

People on a high protein diet require more water than a regular eater, as the water will flush out things like uric acid, caused by the extra protein. Another risk of high protein diets that can be combated with water is that, if you're not eating carbohydrates, your body breaks down fat cells and then produces a buildup of toxic chemical compounds, called ketones in your blood. When there are too many ketones in your blood, your body eliminates them in your urine. Eliminate too many ketones, and you also eliminate too much water. Without replacing it, you can suffer severe dehydration and the risk of abnormal heart rhythms

More than 1,760 neighbourhoods and communities across Canada are currently being told to boil their drinking water, the Canadian Medical Association Journal reports.
"That's the minimum. There's probably more than that," said Steve Hrudey, a public health engineer who also served on the research advisory panel into contaminated water crisis in Walkerton, Ont. Seven people died and at least 2300 people became ill due to an outbreak of E. coli in the Walkerton water supply in May, 2000. While boil-water advisories are supposed to be used as a "precautionary measure," Hrudey said it is obvious the advisories are being used in place of treatment. "A lot of those advisories have been in place for months and in some cases years. So clearly in those kinds of situations, the boil water advisory is being used as an alternative to treatment, which is just not acceptable," he said.  A spokesman for the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care also told the CMAJ that public health units in Ontario, for example, do not always report all their advisories to the Ministry, nor do they always report when an advisory has been lifted.
"We've got a situation in Canada . . .

By their very nature, the pipes a plumber might work on in your house tend to be made of lead.
After all, the Latin word for lead is plumbum.
For so many post-war suburban homes, pipes that carry water indoors contain this poisonous metal.
Lead systems also funnel drinking water into most Victorian-era homes, common in cities and towns across Canada, like Ottawa and Montreal. The City of Ottawa estimates about 28,000 homes built before 1955 have lead pipes. But pipes in newer subdivisions aren't made with lead. And some homes that have had construction done nearby may have had safer copper replacements installed by the city. This week, the Province of Ontario ordered 36 municipalities to undergo testing after higher-than-normal levels were found in water in homes in London. Preliminary water tests at Queen's Park also came back abnormal. Seven of 20 tested sources of tap water at the Ontario legislature were found to have higher-than-allowable levels of lead.

Today more than ever, people are bombarded with information, and misinformation, about many consumer products. The digital age of information gathering allows anyone, at any time, to read millions of opinions on countless products that are posted on websites from around the world. The sheer quantity of information that one can gather is mind boggling, and it is easy to become confused by the contradictory views from one "expert" to the next. While it can be difficult to determine who the actual experts are, as almost anyone can appear to be an authority by sending their opinions out to the masses with the use of today's technology, it is often much easier to verify the facts of what the individual is saying. Therefore, before accepting information on which to base one's opinion of a particular product, it is important to look at the facts and not be misled by false claims and misinformation intended to detract from what really matters about a product.

When you suffer from dehydration symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, learning how to cleanse and re-hydrate your body will improve your physical energy as well as reduce brain fog, headaches, skin problems, joint and muscle pain, poor digestion and cravings.

When dehydrated, our internal cleansing system becomes congested and stagnates like dirty dish water. It's amazing how much importance we place on cleaning the outside of our body, and how little importance we place on cleaning the inside!

The global consumption of bottled water has increased an astounding 57% over the past 5 years to 154 billion litres in 2004 and is on the verge of becoming the number one consumed beverage in North America. But isn’t this multi-billion dollar industry supplying the same stuff we get out of the tap for free? One of the reasons for the increase in bottled water consumption is a seeming lack of confidence in many municipal water supplies. With incidents like the E.coli outbreak in Walkerton in 2000 and daily boil water advisories around the country, it is no wonder that many people have turned to bottled water for what they see as a “safe” and convenient alternative to tap water. After all, is it really feasible to treat 100% of tap water to the point that it is risk-free for drinking when less than 0.5% of tap water is used for drinking?

But is bottled water really a “safer” choice? Wise consumers focus on both water purity, which is determined by the level of (usually invisible) non-H2O substances in the water as well as water disinfection, referring to the method and effectiveness in destroying bacteria (such as E.coli), viruses and other water-borne microbial pathogens (like cryptosporidium). The most common methods of disinfection today are chlorination, ultraviolet (UV) light, boiling and ozonation.

Cryptosporidium and Giardia

9/20/10 3:58 AM

Cryptosporidium and Giardia are two words that have come up lately in conversations with our cottage owning customers in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. These people are interested to know more about Cryptosporidium and Giardia and how to treat their lake water to ensure that they do not get sick. Infection caused by Cryptosporidium is called Cryptosporidiosis, and Giardia sickness is called Giardiasis or “Beaver Fever.” Cryptosporidium and Giardia are both water-borne parasites that infect the intestines of humans and cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, and nausea; symptoms can last 7-10 days for most people who are otherwise healthy. Both Cryptosporidium and Giardia exist as oocysts in untreated lake, stream and river water. These hard shelled oocysts protect the viruses from a wide range of environmental conditions. The best way for cottage owners to avoid contracting Cryptosporidium or Giardia that may be in their untreated water is to use a filter with an “absolute (not “nominal”) pore size of 1 micron or smaller. This will effectively remove Cryptosporidium and Giardia oocysts from water. Due to the hard shelled oocysts protecting these parasites, ultraviolet light and chlorine do not effectively treat them. Once cottage owners have an effective filtration system in place they can enjoy peace of mind knowing that Cryptosporidium and Giardia will not be an issue in their drinking water.

I woke up to some good news today, when I saw the headline "Green Party of Canada calls for ban on the fluoridation chemicals hexafluorosilicic acid and sodium silicofluoride." It seems that, like me, the Green Party isn't happy with the fact that we indiscriminately pump fluoride into our water supply and wants it banned at the federal level. Go Green Party!

I wanted to take some time to pass along to each and everyone of you our appreciation. The support of World of Water is hugely important to us as it forms an integral part of the team that makes the Manitoba Marathon work. The success, enjoyed by the Manitoba Marathon, has only been possible because of the support we receive from companies like yours - companies committed to a healthy lifestyle for all, including people living with an intellectual disability. Manitoba Marathon has grown to nearly 14,000 participants and over 2000 volunteers plus thousands of spectators - that would not have happened had we not enjoyed the support from your volunteer team and your stores. MONDAY, Aug. 23 (HealthDay News) -- Close the diet books and skip the pills. The latest weight-loss trick may be as simple as gulping a couple of glasses of water before you eat.
A new study found that middle-aged and older adults who drank two cups of water before each meal consumed fewer calories and lost more weight than those who skipped drinking water.
Researchers divided two groups of overweight and obese men and women aged 55 to 75 into two groups: one group was told to follow a low-fat, low-calorie diet; the other group was told to follow the same diet and to drink two cups of water before breakfast, lunch and dinner.
